Carry your Lunch Japanese Style

With school starting soon, I wanted to share with you a fantastic furoshiki lunch box alternative. Lay a fabric wrap flat on the table and place your lunch items in the center. Take two opposite corners and tie them into a square knot; repeat with the remaining two corners. The lunch bundle can be carried by holding it from the top knot. Fabric lunch wraps are versatile as the fabric gathers around any shape so you can include drinks and larger items. When you are ready to eat, simply untie the knots and use the wrap as a table cloth and napkin. Furochic is 100% cotton so can be easily washed if necessary before using again.

Summer Furochic

Summer is a great time to use Furochic fabric wraps for gifts or keep one in your purse for outings. If it gets hot, you've got a headscarf to protect you, if it gets mucky you've got a nice clean square to sit on, if you get hungry you can bundle up a picnic lunch in a wrap and then use it as a napkin or tablecloth. Perfect for the beach too - brush off sandy hands, make one into a bag for collecting shells, wrap your sunscreen up so it doesn't leak in your bag etc... And don't worry if your wrap gets dirty, you can simply pop it in the washing machine, hang to dry and it's as good as new.

Art Gallery of Victoria

100 children in Victoria now know how to wrap furoshiki style! Last Sunday I was honoured to be a part of the Art Gallery of Victoria's Family Sunday event where children used fabric pens and pastels to create inspiring designs on 27"X27" cotton wraps. They used their wraps to learn how to wrap gifts, bundle up their toys into a cute carry bag and create a cozy wrap for their stuffed animals. It was a treat to spend two hours in the beautiful William Morris style room and my friend Hitomi arrived in a gorgeous Spring kimono for the event. Here I am with the lovely Susanne - a most talented artist and art teacher at the gallery whose enthusiasm, passion for art and happy personality inspire all that meet her! Thanks Susanne and Tania for inviting me to be a part of this event!

It's a Small World

I really love the graphics in Disney's It's A Small World. It hasn't changed since the 1960's and is a timeless beauty of bright colours, stylized characters and international costumes and motifs. Lucky for me, it was Ava's favourite ride so I got to go on it twice! Snapping away both times, the photos don't do it justice but have captured some of the wonderful moments. Where would you like to go? I think I would pick India and Brazil!

Wrapagami Workshop in Vero Beach

I'm home after a long 15 hour trip and am missing the sun, swimming, beach, pelicans and fresh OJ! My family has lived in Vero Beach, Florida since I was 8 so as soon as I arrive and feel the humid tropical air and see the palm trees, memories begin to flood back. I love the combo of the old rugged Florida and the pristine natural beauty. I am a huge book lover and have my favourite shops I frequent in my travels. One of which is the Vero Beach Book Center where I always find great gems. I was honoured to run a Wrapagami workshop in the store on March 12 where a very nice and attentive group of ladies joined me to learn the art of wrapping with fabric. Here's a couple of photos of Furochic in the shop. Notice the cute double knot wrap where they matched up the pens with the Furochic fabric.

The kids are back at school and I am marveling at how quiet my day is! I have finally been able to upload my new press to my website and what an exciting month it was! Thank you to all who wrote about Furochic and Wrapagami. Country Living asked me to enter a Gift Wrap Designer Challenge and they chose my Repurposed Wrap from Wrapagami (see photo). On December 23, I was interviewed live on Martha Stewart Living Radio which was very fun. Etsy wrote a fantastic article on Furochic and Wrapagami in their newsletter, The Storque. The comments from people at the end of the post are so nice to read. The Boston Herald wrote about Furochic the week before Christmas as a way to go green for the holidays. Babyvibe and Saavymom interviewed me as a mom entrepreneur. Thank you!

I am starting the new year with new images. Look out for a catchy, colourful and fun video to be launched on my home page soon. As we start this futuristic sounding year of 2010, I can't help but think that while we are moving foward at top speed with new technology and progress, we are also embracing the old fashioned, simple and smart ways of living. I feel proud to be a part of this movement with Furochic. Returning to the use of durable and reusable fabric versus disposable paper and plastic is exciting. Plus if you are a fabric junkie like me, it gives us an excuse to use fabric in our everyday lives.

I recently watched the movie Julie & Julia and loved it. Before seeing the movie I had put myself to a similar test of blogging everyday on 365 ways to use a square piece of fabric. Although I still entertain the idea, and admire Julie's determination and dedication, I have not been able to commit quite yet. I do hope though as the new year begins to offer a place for you to come and marvel at how versatile these square furoshiki cloths can be. As I teach more workshops on wrapping with fabric, I love to see what other people come up with that I had never thought of. If you are one of these inventive people, take a quick snapshot of your beautiful package as I will be starting monthly giveaways to those with the best ideas (more details to come at www.furochic.com).

Weekly Wrap #6 - Bundle it up and carry!

Here is a great idea that one of my recent workshop participants came up with. Kathy placed her purchases from the workshop in the middle of the wrap and tied it into a cute little carry bag to bring home. Place your wrap on a diagonal with the items in the center. Take two opposite corners together and tie a square knot over the center. Take the two remaining opposite corners and twist the fabric. Tie a small secure square knot at the top (this forms the handle). Thanks Kathy!

Furochic workshop

I'm finding that many people think that wrapping furoshiki style is difficult and even when I say "no really, it is SO easy" they look at me like they don't quite believe me! During my workshops, people can try the wraps first hand and they marvel at the simplicity of the wrapping techniques and the beautiful final presentation. Maybe it is the way the fabric gathers with all of it's charm - it is so forgiving.

Here are some photos of my last workshop at my friend Diana's in Victoria. She has since sent a suitcase full of presents wrapped in fabric for her husband to bring to their family in Ottawa, instructing him how to fluff up the fabric once he arrives. No more squished presents with the possibility of torn paper. Fabric wrapped gifts can get thrown about in the suitcase and after a bit of fluffing up, they look great!

I love my birthday (November 30th). It doesn't take much for me to convince myself that I deserve a little treat and on my birthday I like to celebrate my life over a full week with spontaneous treats. Hence, the new decorative item in the house, Tomiko. I love the idea that the things that bring character to your home can inspire kids and find a place in their childhood memories. After bringing Tomiko home, Ava started her series of kokeshi doll drawings. Here is my favourite.

I'm sorry to say that there is not a weekly wrap this week because I have been SO busy wrapping away at many Furochic workshops and parties! With holiday gift giving around the corner, there has been a lot of interest from people who would like to wrap their gifts this year in reusable fabric. Here are some photos of the great window display at Plenty Epicurean Pantry in Victoria, a beautiful and eclectic store full of exotic and earth friendly goodies. I ran a workshop in the shop on Buy Nothing Day where the store was closed for purchases but open for fun to promote the idea of cutting back on consumerism by refraining from buying anything for one day.

Wrapagami is making it's way into the shops and here it is alongside other cute and crafty books.

Weekly Wrap #5 - Odd Shaped Gifts

Fabric wraps are perfect for odd shaped gifts and soft items such as plush toys or clothes. I've always thought store boxes for clothes were wasteful - their only function making the gift easier to wrap with paper and then usually ending up in the garbage. For this weeks wrap, I took an odd shaped gift that was given to me by a friend from her travels to Thailand to show you how easy it is to wrap with a Furochic. The pointy bits would have definitely ripped paper wrap.

Place the gift in the center of the wrap which is on a diagonal. Bring two opposite corners together and tie a square knot over the gift. Bring the remaining two corners and tie another square knot. I chose to embellish this gift with a butterfly which is clipped on to the top knot.

Weekly Wrap #4 - Furochic and Kids

Kids seem to be the most creative with their Furochic wraps. Ava who is 7, wraps her birthday gifts for her friends in Furochic and the girls use them in their play whether it is a blanket for a stuffed animal, a table cloth for a fancy tea party or a new dress. Oliver loves his Furochic as a cape and runs around the house with it flying behind him in the wind. For children that are crafty, fabric wraps can be cut up for sewing projects. Kids love how they get to keep the gift wrap and it can be a way to teach them how to reduce waste.

Oh and by the way, Sofia and Ava designed their Furochic dresses completely on their own and wrapped themselves up with elegance!

Weekly Wrap #3 - Kangaroo Wrap

This is my favourite wrap. I just love the pocket - a perfect spot to tuck in a cute little guy or use it as a functional place to hold your greeting card. This wrap is something you can't do with paper gift wrap making it unique to using fabric. It's also very quick and easy.

Weekly Wrap #2 - Carry your beer to the party

We went to a Halloween party this weekend and brought some beer all dressed up in an orange Furochic for the festivities. Place the wrap on a diagonal with the beer in the center of the wrap and bring 2 opposite corners together and tie a knot. The other two corners can be twisted before you tie a square knot to create a little handle. The gold foil on the beer looks great exposed so you don't need to worry about covering it all up. This is more of a chic carry case.

My Day Wedding magazine covered Furochic and Wrapagami in their Fall issue. Fabric wraps are fantastic for wedding gifts as they are luxurious and fancy! I am a gadget girl. I still marvel at how email and the internet work! This summer I discovered an electronic sketchbook that has changed the way I do my illustration, it is so exciting! I bought the Wacom Cintiq tablet and it is a dream for smooth line work. Here's a new illustration that I did using the tablet.

Ocean Discovery Center

It was a treat to work with my friend Janice earlier this Summer who hired me to illustrate 2 kids t-shirts for the gift shop at the Ocean Discovery Center in Victoria. Greeting the Emperor & Empress of Japan

I have met the most lovely woman here in Victoria. We knew the second we met that we would work together in some way. In the Fall, Hitomi (on the right) will launch Furochic to the Japanese market as a modern take on the traditional Japanese wrapping cloth, furoshiki. Recently her mother visited from Japan and I was honoured to be invited to watch Hitomi, her mother and a friend prepare to greet the Emperor & Empress of Japan when they arrived in Victoria last month. The kimonos were brought from Japan from Hitomi's family kimono business and were very carefully chosen so that the colours and designs reflected the occasion and the hot Summer weather. They were the epitome of elegance and grace.

This is my portion of the booth at the CGTA Gift Show, August 8-12 in Toronto. When I do these shows, I am determined that everything must fit in one suitcase and the set up should take no longer than 45 minutes! On the last day, the show ended at 3, I was on the plane by 4:30 and home in Victoria for dinner! For those of you that don't know me, I've been packing my suitcase since I was 6 so I have a lot of practice!

Here are some photos from the Surtex show for art licensing in May in NYC. I shared a booth with my fellow Magnet Reps artists, Bella Pilar and Catalina Estrada. At the end of the show, Bella had an artist appearance at the Papyrus store in Grand Central. She was very glam and looked perfect sitting at the fancy desk amongst her gorgeous products. Isn't this a fantastic window display?

This is one of my favourite photos of myself mostly because I am in one of my favourite places. What could be more grand than Grand Central? That will forever be my favourite colour blue! I love imagining where everyone comes from and where they are going. Endless possibilities.

Ok, this is ridiculous, 3 months since my last post! And I love blogging! My life seems to be flying by with heavenly hours spent creating with my ongoing medley of projects and balancing my creative world with my two spirited children! Here's a recap of what has been going on in my world. In May I was in Surtex mode and had my head down focusing on new designs for my licensing portfolio. I exhibited at the trade show with my agent from Magnet Reps and my friend Bella Pilar whose glamour girl illustrations are so beautiful you want them all over your house! Catalina Estrada also had her gorgeous art in the booth. The collection I enjoyed working on the most was Gigi Bijou where I was inspired by intricate and sparkly vintage jewellery made into patterns that came alive through flipping and rotating the gems. My Pikolini (little ones in Italian) characters were fun to create and I have visions of little ones putting their heads down to rest on pillows and bedding adorned with these little guys. La Belle Bombay was the perfect combo of my love for all things French and Indian!

June was my Furochic month! I designed my second collection which is being printed as we speak and will be ready to send to the shops in October. Picking 6 designs was agony! How do you get the right balance of colours, holiday versus everyday and not too many flowers etc... I finally took the plunge and decided on 6. In anticipation of the release of Wrapagami, I filmed a promo video where I demonstrate how to use Furochic. I was offered a fantastic opportunity to exhibit at the CGTA in Toronto in August and in fact have just returned from the trip. Picked up lot's of tips from other talented business woman/creators and had the chance to have my video played on a loop to attract buyers to my booth. These shows are always a success and I come home with nuggets of information I didn't know before.

Kokeshi

I just finished a dream project - decorating my very own kokeshi doll! I was invited as one of 100 artists to partake in an exhibit at the LADTA (Los Angeles Doll, Toy and Amusements Museum) curated by Christina Conway and the Japanese American National Museum. Each artist received a blank wooden kokeshi doll to paint and embellish. The freedom of losing yourself in a completely creative project is so rewarding not to mention slightly nerve wracking since I only had one little doll to transform. Mariette is complete and ready to be shipped back to LA, hopefully with all of her false eyelashes in place! See photos from last years show - they are amazing.

Spring Time

It's been a good week! The Fedex guy surprised me with 3 heavy boxes of my book, Wrapagami, 3 months earlier than I was expecting! The colours pop off the page. It is so nice to say that I am happy with this book in every way. It is such a satisfying feeling when a project is completed and you are happy with the end result. I am thrilled to announce that that my book Wrapagami is on it's way to the printers. The layout and design reflects my style and my Furochic designs in a perfect way making a it cohesive, fun, useful and colourful little book! There are 22 projects that illustrate how to use a square piece of fabric to wrap gifts. The fabric wrap becomes part of the gift and can be reused over and over again making it the eco-friendly alternative to disposable paper gift wrap and bags. It's always so exciting when you discover an artist or product you love or feel inspired by. Last September I was browsing in one of my favourite stores in New York City, Kinokuniya, the fantastic 2 level store full of Japanese books, magazines and other Asian delights when I fell in love with a Spicy Brown t-shirt. The colours were perfect, as was the scoop neck and soft organic cotton and of course the adorable Kokeshi character. I bought one with the hopes that it would never wear out! Aren't these amazing?! While sourcing new items for my Jenn Loves page on www.furochic.com, I came across these miniature works of art by Jeanne Cassanova. I love the way each one is a world of it's own with sparkles, trinkets, vintage findings and little surprises. Each art corsage comes with a pin on the back to decorate your lapel, sweaters, bags etc... I like the idea of pinning one onto the outside of a fabric gift wrap to embellish a gift, and becoming a little extra gift to treasure. Happy New Year Everyone! I know it's January 20th but to me it feels like this is the day of new beginnings. A new president, a new hope, new inspiration, and a sense that anything is possible and dreams do come true! There's nothing more exciting than seeing history being made in a positive way that moves us to live our best life with an open minded attitude and compassion for others. New website

I never thought I would be relaunching a new website so soon but as my business constantly evolves I find there is a need to rethink, and start fresh. The inspiration is my upcoming book, Wrapagami, published by St Martin's Griffen and in stores the Summer 2009. It is a book on the art of wrapping with fabric and features Furochic in action. More about the book later except to say that it was the most fun and satisfying creative endeavour I have ever done! So the site is almost done with a few new additions, I am now officially a You Tuber and Blogger. It feels good to take the plunge into the wonders of the internet.
